Good Morning Residents.
Residents regularly raise with us issues around driving standards such as speeding and mobile phone use as concerns in our communities.
We recognise that driving standards are a concern for residents and since Autumn the neighbourhood policing teams across Bolton have been conducting regular operations targeting these concerns.
This month the Tonge and Breightmet team will be concentrating our efforts on a number of sites raised by the community including Bury Road, Tonge Moor Road / Folds Road, Radcliffe Road and New Lane / Stitch-mi-Lane. With enforcement operations around the “Fatal Four” - Speeding, Mobile Phone Use, Seatbelts and Impaired Driving (through drink and drugs).
We will be using equipment to detect speed, “spotters” to observe mobile device offences and stopping and speaking to drivers to conduct documentation checks and drink / drug tests where appropriate.
In previous months you may have seen us at recently on Thicketford Road, Winchester Way, Bury Road, Crompton Way and Folds Road. We plan to continue these action days to help drive forwards an improvement in driver standards as we work towards >> Vision Zero <<
Why are we telling you where we will be…? Simply we don’t want to catch people committing offences, speeding, using phones etc. We want people NOT to speed, Not to use mobile devices, Not to drive while impaired and to wear seatbelts. We are trying to drive a behavioural change.
To put it a different way - A successful operation is an operation where no offences are detected because everyone is driving lawfully and safely.
Remember enforcement can take place anywhere at any time and NOT just at the sites given above. Officers may conduct ad-hoc checks and will deal with offences when observed while dealing with other matters and on patrol.
In addition to these locally arranged operations GMP Continues to run a number of regular forcewide Operations to tackle driving offences these include:
Operation Snap – Is your way to help via our online submission portal. Members of the public and submit dashcam / helmet cam / mobile phone camera footage of suspected offences. Specially trained staff review each clip and outcomes can range from warning letters to action from the central ticket office in terms of fines and further prosecution, each outcome in terms of whether further action or no action was taken communicated directly to the person submitting the report further down the line. The sole purpose is to improve road safety and to prosecute those that place others at risk, meaning we can effectively deal with the footage recorded by members of the public in a safe and secure way, whilst making the investigation process simple and straightforward You can find out more and make an online report / submit footage via the GMP website here >>OP SNAP<<
Operation Considerate – GMPs dedicated forcewide operation that aims to detect a range of driving offences and prosecute offenders where necessary as well as offering education and awareness as how we can all be safer on the roads.
Operation Classify – This is an operation in partnership with Bolton Council and other agencies to target particular high-risk road routes or locations and to target repeat or risk offenders. The operation uses “pop-up” enforcement as well as technological solutions to identify targets and develop solutions beyond enforcement.
Operation Hurricane – Dedicated to tackling the illegal use of vehicles, particularly off road vehicles & motorcycles. This intelligence lead operation uses GMP specialist operations motorcycle and intercept teams and air support including drones and fixed wing aircraft with long loiter times to root out vehicles and offenders and leads to numerous seizures and prosecutions. As the operations are intelligence lead it is crucial that the public support these operations with timely reports of vehicles being used to GMP via 101 or Online. Intelligence relating the use, storage and people using the vehicles can be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers.
Operation TopDeck – Specially trained officers from the roads policing unit board Bee Network buses, and using cameras from an elevated position to detect dangerous driving behaviour on public roads.
